‘The Sonics’
We’re pleased to be welcoming The Sonics back to Leeds!
The Sonics were the first and still THE best punk band of all times! Formed in 1960 and predated them all by four years with a rock ‘n’ roll sound rooted in three chords and songs about evil women, drugs and screaming, explosive in sound and attitude with fuzzed- out guitars, soulful screams and hard-hitting jungle rhythms.
Their debut album Here Are The Sonics marked the first time music that fit the punk rock archetype was pressed to vinyl. Bruce Springsteen, Nirvana, The White Stripes and many others have cited The Sonics as a huge influence on their sound.
Songs like The Witch, Psycho and Strychnine have become rites of passage for many a modern-day garage punk band, and they have been covered by The Cramps, The Flaming Lips, Mudhoney and The Fall.
The Sonics’ current touring line up consists of Rob Lind, Dusty Watson and Evan Foster plus new members Joe Doria and Tom Jorgenson. Original founding members Gerry Roslie and Larry Parypa had to stop touring due to health issues, but the new line-up is wild and loud as you like it!
Special guests are Imperial Wax. Imperial Wax play a visceral, expressive fusion of garage rock and post-punk. Forming in 2018, guitarist Pete Greenway, drummer Keiron Melling and bassist Dave Spurr – formerly known as the last and longest serving line up of The Fall – were invited by Damo Sazuki to join him as ‘Sound Carriers‘ for a one-off performance at the White Hotel in Salford. Rekindling their necessity for music, they set about searching for a vocalist. After a chance encounter at a pub in Colne and a lengthy conversation about the future of Imperial Wax, they decided to team up with Sam Curran, guitarist and vocalist from Leeds-based punk band Black Pudding.
May 2019 saw the release of their critically acclaimed debut album, Gastwerk Saboteurs, plus the singles No Man’s Land and Art Of Projection. Later that year, while touring the UK, Ireland and Europe, John Robb’s Louder Than War released the double A side single Bromidic Thrills and Bloom & Wither. Previous sold-out dates and festival appearances include at London Calling, Left of the Dial, Rockaway Beach, Long Division and Love Music Hate Racism. Their new album is set for release in early 2024.
This show is a co-promotion with Brudenell Presents.
