Steve Gullick has photographed for NME and Melody Maker as well as his own publications Careless Talk Costs Lives and Loose Lips Sink Ships – and has impeccable taste, with Nirvana, Bjork, Beck, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Neil Young and Nick Cave among the familiar names that will feature.

To get a ticket – of which there are only a few remaining – you need to go in and buy a copy of his new album, Truelove’s Gutter. He’ll sign it after his performance, from 4pm tomorrow.

And Piccadilly Records’ weekly newsletter also flags up an appeal that may be of interest to Manchester music history fans:

Manchester District Music Archive is currently seeking information, photos and artifacts relating to gay clubs and bars in Greater Manchester from the 1940s to the present day. They are planning a large-scale event in February 2010, hosted by writer Jon Savage, which will celebrate the history of gay music culture in Greater Manchester. This will be followed by an in-depth virtual exhibition on their website MDMArchive, so they need photos, flyers, tickets, posters, fanzines, membership cards – that kind of thing.

They are also looking to interview any regular attendees of gay clubs and bars over the years (across the whole of Greater Manchester), or anyone who has been a member of a musical group, such as a choir or band that had an LGBT focus.

If you can contribute, get in touch by emailing info@mdmarchive.co.uk.

Following on from its inaugural year in 2008, Un-convention returns in June to bring independent music debate and performance to the Sacred Trinity Church in Salford.

Last year’s event complemented the more mainstream In The City conference – but with its early summer slot this time around, the event is even more tempting. Here’s what’s on offer panels-wise (click on each for more information):

The Artists Panel

‘Outside the Box’

It’s Easier to Ask For Forgiveness

And the music programme isn’t bad either, with Everything Everything, The Loose Salute, Arthur Delaney, Magic Arm, Jake Flowers and I Am Kloot among the potential highlights.

Plenty of familiar names are signed up: Peter Hook, John Robb, Jay Taylor, Howard Monk from The Local… plus BBC DJ Tom Robinson is lending his support in the form of an Introducing show featuring 22 tracks from artists involved, and sessions with Kyte, Sisters of Transistors and Gallops.

Un-convention 2009 kicks off next Thursday, 4 June, and continues throughout Friday and Saturday. A full pass costs £40 and live music tickets cost £7.50 per night or £18 for all three nights. Check out the Un-convention site for more details, and follow the event on Twitter.

May’s in full flow right now and so far this month we’ve enjoyed shows by Soap&Skin, Philip Glass, Murcof, Johann Johannsson, Jeffrey Lewis, the Broken Family Band and Melt-Banana. This week looks set to be no different…

Tomorrow, Tuesday, Canada’s Great Lake Swimmers are playing for us at Dulcimer in Chorlton. This show’s pretty much sold out now, which was predictable as it’s a great lineup with New York’s Sharon van Etten and Manchester’s own Last Harbour also playing.

Deerhunter, meanwhile, are doing something quite unusual – they’re playing two shows at the Deaf Institute tomorrow. The early show starts at 3pm, with the band on at 6pm, and the late show is from 8pm. Looks like the evening performance has sold out. And on Wednesday, the much-tipped Telepathe play another Now Wave night at the same venue. More info and tickets for both here.

Also on Wednesday, Chorlton-based label Broken Horse are promoting a rare performance by AC Newman (of New Pornographers fame) at Retro Bar. He’s playing with his band, and Andrew Morgan is supporting. Tickets from here.

There’s nothing much happening on Thursday, but on Friday there’s the debut appearance by The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. They’re from New York, they’re into Sarah Records-era c86 and we love them. This one’s a Friends of Mine night, at the Chorlton Irish Club. Tickets are here. Or local female-fronted Norweigan folkies Kalbakken are playing an intimate show upstairs in Briton’s Protection.

On Saturday, you’ve got a choice between Manchester’s Magic Arm, who’s launching his album with a full band show at the Deaf Institute, or Akron/Family at the Ruby Lounge. Both have their merits – the latter being one of the most fun bands we’ve put on, while the former has excellent support from Homelife and Beth Jean Houghton.

Finally, make the most of the bank holiday weekend with a Sunday show. We’ve pulled together some of the best folk talent in Manchester including Denis Jones, John Stammers, Starless & Bible Black and Sparky Deathcap – plus Drag City-signed headliner Alasdair Roberts – for an all-evening event at Dulcimer. There’ll also be barbecue (if the weather’s fine) and DJs playing. More info and tickets are here.

May looks set to be a crazy month for live music in Manchester, and it kicks off with a few great shows this week…

On Tuesday, anti-folkster Jeffrey Lewis plays with his band (currently called The Junkyard) at Academy 3. His new album, Em Are I, is his best yet in our opinion – are is his current selection of comic book soundtracks. Support comes from Planet Earth and Coventry’s Don’t Move. Tickets are here.

Then on Wednesday, Football and Underachievers Please Try Harder are teaming up to promote a great indie-pop lineup: New Yorkers Bishop Allen, plus Amida and Married to the Sea. Tickets are only £6 and capacity at Cafe Saki in Rusholme is 120, so book now. Or much-touted local band The Jessie Rose Trip are also playing on Wednesday, at the Ruby Lounge. Tickets here.

Thursday brings a Drowned In Sound night at the Deaf Institute. This one features two great electronica acts in France’s M83 and German composer/producer Ulrich Schnauss. We rate both very highly – and apparently plenty of other people do too, as the show sold out some time ago.

And wrapping things up this week are Cambridge’s The Broken Family Band. If you like wonky, bouncy country songs, check them out. They’re playing at the Ruby Lounge on Friday. Tickets are £10 in advance.

A few bits and pieces this week – namely…

Mr Elvis Costello performing with the Brodsky Quartet at the Bridgewater Hall on Monday night. They’ll be playing their collaboration, the Juliet Letters, plus Costello’s newly written songs for voice and quartet, and some rearranged songs from his back catalogue. More info and tickets.

Or for something completely different on Monday night, try Music for One, a Canadian who will ‘warm the ears of fans of John Fahey, Robbie Basho and John Renbourn’, plus Serfs, Darren Adcocks and The Royal House of Choke. This one’s at Kro Bar, opposite the Union, and costs £3. Contact Of The Making Ilk for more information.

Then there’s nothing! Until Saturday at least, when the impressive Deaf to Van Gogh’s Ear are launching their EP, We Call Them Accidents Because We Don’t Want Them To Happen. This one’s also at Kro Bar and is free. The Empty Set are among the support acts.
