Hungry Pigeon – The Northern Quarter Festival 2009
Many of Manchester’s most popular events happen when several local promoters band together – Salford’s Sounds From The Other City, which we’ll write about soon, and the recent Friends of Music, to name two.
Another example looks set to be Hungry Pigeon, a Northern Quarter-based festival that will take place in May. It follows last year’s MAPS festival – the difference this time being the collaboration between local promoters Stu Avery, Alex McCann, Andy Fletcher, Vuz Kapur – and also the quality of artists. Here’s who’s confirmed so far:
NINE BLACK ALPS
WAVE MACHINES
MISTY’S BIG ADVENTURE
THE TRAVELLING BAND
THE VORTEX
THE MAYBES
KARIMA FRANCIS
WHISKY CATS
THE JESSIE ROSE TRIP
FRAZER KING
CASIO KID
GIDEON CONN
The event, which is supported by Manchester City Council, will take place at 16 venues around the Northern Quarter including an intriguing ’5,000-capacity outdoor stage in a secret location’. There will be 200 bands confirmed by May, plus other art forms will be represented.
Hungry Pigeon takes place from 22-25 May, with tickets (priced £23.50 for the weekend or £12 per day) now on sale from Ticketline.co.uk.
Oh and ‘PLEASE NOTE: ANYONE CLAIMING TO BE PUTTING ON A FESTIVAL CALLED MAPS THIS YEAR IS NOTHING TO DO WITH US, AND IS ATTEMPTING TO TRADE ON OUR SUCCESS FROM LAST YEAR…. PLEASE BE ASSURED THAT HUNGRY PIGEON IS THE RE-INCARNATION OF LAST YEAR’S EVENT AND WE ARE TAKING LEGAL ACTION AGAINST THOSE RESPONSIBLE!!!’

Are they having a laugh? Those 4 couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery. Absolute wronguns, that V-Man character still owes my band money!

The people who make bands pay to play need shooting down!! V man events are a shambles!! Theres too many bands in Manchester being exploited by promoters and shit bands get good slots just because they have a good following where the quality can sometimes be left by the wayside with no opportunity to get in the limelight!!
Bring on the Hungry Pigeon!!

What a bullshit quote at the end, the original maps festival is still gonna be run this year under its original name just using different promoters because as said by somebody else v-man is shit. As far as im aware the right to the maps festival are owned by somebody who obviously doesnt wanna work with a bunch of half-wits

who cares about all the promoter politics!
Hungry Pigeon has a decent line up and only 20quid for 4 days of music – cant go wrong with that

Please can someone let me know if you purchase a day ticket for the Hungry Pigeon Festival, does this mean you will definitely get in to the various venues – or could you still be refused entry (and I don’t mean for being too p*ssed!). Cheers.

As an artist I have never been treated so unprofessionally. Do or play? or Fuck it?
May 9th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Is it just me or are the musicians being taken for a ride again by not getting paid? Bars make money, promoters make money and the bands who do all the work at the gigs get fuck all. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MAP’s is being put on by some idiot this year. Hungry Pigeon is the real Festival in town. Cant be arsed listening to all you lousy comments about promoters and bars, get a grip – you obviously didnt get paid cause you couldnt scrape together the bare minimun, probably cause you’re Shite or someting!

As much as vman is a tit, He still put’s small local bands on to play with some big (ish) half decent bands, if this means sellin a few tickets to get on a good gig and help spread word of your band, i’m sound with that.
And what happend to the love of music?! every fools moanin about having to sell a few tickets… Play your set and enjoy it! If you are strugglin sell a few tickets, i advise you wright some good tunes and get a real following rather than just yer mam.
If you dont like any of this… stop kiddin yourself into bein some rockstar and get a propper job. This is how it is these days.
Finally, Who care’s who’s puttin on what?! the more gigs and music thats goin on… the better right?! If it’s a good doo, the people behind it will be noticed.

loved the hp festival….
dont care about politics…. same can b said for the reasons why i support fc utd instead of big utd = dont care about politics, just care about having a good time and listen to sum good music… end of.
congratulations… i well enjoyed it! same again next year please.
only 1 comment – shame it was same weekend as euroculture, and sounds from the other city (liverpool)
…. and shame magic arm didnt play or danny mahon or lowline.
itc (in the city) and fom (friends of manchester) more recently, were brilliant too…. so please take note.
@ one point on saturday night there was 4 or 5 bands in 4 or 5 venues i wanted to see… nightmare!

More thought went into the name of the festival than the actual content.
Beer and mediocre music.
How unique.

@Dunk. That’s a very stupid and childish remark. I wouldn’t be surprised if you were Vuz pretending to be someone else to stick up for yourself online.
@Dave. He is a complete tit, yes. But “Pay to Play” is wrong, on all levels. There is no problem with bands promoting the gig and trying to get all their friends to come down and support them. There is no problem with getting bands to sell tickets. But to only pay them if they sell a certain amount of tickets is wrong. Bands should be paid about 20%+ of all their ticket sales, to make it fair and cover promoters costs IMO.
